Bullying at Work: It Happens — Here’s How to Face It

When most people hear the word “bullying,” they think of playgrounds, school hallways, or childhood memories they’d rather forget. But for many adults, bullying shows up at work — sometimes where you least expect it.

In my years of coaching, I’ve seen bullying at every level: senior leaders who push too hard, peers who undermine in subtle ways, or even direct reports who wield influence in unhealthy ways. It can be out in the open or hidden behind closed doors.

What stands out to me is how differently people react:

  • Some push back forcefully.
  • Some freeze and do nothing, hoping it will pass.
  • Some stay silent and carry the weight alone.

None of these reactions are a sign of weakness,  they’re normal, human responses to feeling threatened or stuck.

If you find yourself on the receiving end, here are a few things that can help:

  1. Keep records.
Don’t rely on memory when emotions run high. Keep simple, factual notes: what happened, when, who was involved, and how it affected you or your work.
  2. Get support.
Don’t carry it alone. Talk to someone you trust — a coach, a mentor, or HR if you feel safe doing so. Just voicing what’s happening can help you see options more clearly.
  3. Know your limits.
Boundaries matter. Sometimes you need to address it head-on. Sometimes you need to pick your battles and disengage where you can. Both are valid.
  4. Take your stress seriously.
Workplace bullying is stressful. It seeps into your sleep, your relationships, and your confidence. If you’re experiencing it, protect your mental health the same way you’d protect your physical health.

Workplace bullying is real and complex. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution — but you don’t have to handle it alone.

If this resonates with you, know this: you’re not imagining it, you’re not weak, and you do have options. I’ll be sharing more ideas and practical steps soon.

Stay steady, and take care of yourself first.
